Map apps show the drive time without any stops, so the real trip usually takes longer. Enter the distance and your average speed, or type in the drive time straight from your maps app. Pick when you’re leaving, or switch to Arrive by to find the latest time you can set off. Then choose how often you’ll pull over for gas and restroom breaks, how many meal stops you’ll make and how heavy the traffic looks. You get your arrival time, the total time on the road and a stop-by-stop plan with clock times. Switch to kilometers for km and km/h.

Estimate only. Real times change with traffic, weather, road work and how long your stops really take.

How it works: driving time = distance ÷ average speed (or the time from your map) plus the traffic buffer, and arrival = departure + driving time + all stops; Arrive by runs the same math backward. A rest stop is added after every 1.5, 2, 3 or 4 hours of driving, but not in the last 30 minutes before you arrive. A meal stop takes the place of a rest stop so it isn’t counted twice, and if you pick more meals than there are rest stops, the stops are spread evenly along the drive. The default of 15 minutes every 2 hours follows common road-safety advice, such as the UK Highway Code. Your average speed is lower than the speed limit once slowdowns, exits and towns are counted, so the presets are on the cautious side.
