Not sure whether you need a 5×8, 8×10 or 9×12? Pick the room, enter its length and width — or tap a typical room — and the calculator finds the standard rug size that fits. In a living room it leaves an even strip of bare floor around the rug. In a bedroom it makes the rug stick out on both sides of the bed, so your feet land on it. In a dining room it leaves room for chairs to slide out without catching the edge. The preview shows the rug in your room. Switch to Metric for meters and centimeter rug sizes.
How it works: living room: largest standard rug that fits inside room − 2 × bare floor (12–18 in is typical, 24 in in big rooms), so the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Bedroom: rug width ≥ bed width + 2 × 18–24 in, and it covers the lower two-thirds of the bed plus the same amount past the foot. Dining: rug ≥ table + 24–30 in on every side so pulled-out chairs stay on it. The rug must still leave at least 12 in (30 cm) of floor to the walls.
